A composite print of hummingbird and nest photos. I was never able to see the
hummingbird in the nest. Nests are about one and one-half inch in diameter and
are difficult to locate, even when a person knows where to look. Nests are found
at the extreme end of tree limbs. There the limb is about the diameter of a pencil.
The location of the nest makes it difficult for tree-climbing predators, such as cats
and snakes, to reach the nest. The nest is made of mud mixed with strands of grass.
The bluish-greenish color patches are small leaf-like lichens found in nearby trees.
Most of the photos are of a humming bird that either was born with wing
problems, or in some way was hurt. Although neither possibility seems likely! I
found it standing on a sidewalk which meant that it had a serious problem. When
I got closer, it flew for a short distance. There was no way that it could sustain
itself in flight and feed from the feeder. I fashioned a support around the feeder
so that it could stand while feeding. After a couple of months its disappeared.
