TOC (3 OF 15) THE MULTI-FACETED POETIC WORLD OF ANGELA DE HOYOS and A CRITICAL LOOK

INTRODUCTION (SELECTED POEMS/seleccions)

Angela de Hoyos is a poet with a paintbrush for a pen. Like a real artist, she transforms her perception of life into una obra de arte, each poem an exquisite masterpiece for us to hang in the galleries of our minds.

With an eloquence which emits warmth and inspiration, the poet takes us gently but firmly by the hand and points towards wisdom, showing us through her verse the paths that she has sculpted. El carino profundo dentro de sus poemas es lo que mas nos toca. Her poems are full of life and love and heart, all this bound together by the strong fiber of wisdom.

With ungiving animo y determinacion, the poet confronts life's natural preocupacion—la muerte. But death, not in its ultimate end, for what she speaks of is what that end holds—que's la vida. Angela struggles with life's forces, and this she does with artist wisdom

With ungiving animo y determinacion, the poet confronts life's natural preocupacion—la muerte. But death, not in its ultimate end, for what she speaks of is what that end holds—que's la vida. Angela struggles with life's forces, and this she does with artistry. She stands maciza y llena de fuerza y energia, even when finding herself in those "wry" thoughts and "negotiations" made necessary by an acute consciousness of her own mortality.

What these poems shade and shape is the soul—el alma, el espiritu. In them we find love, caring, ternura—these nourishing the soul and nurturing life. We see un alma coming to terms with life, thus death. Y de este entendimiento es de donde nace el juicio que Angela nos regale con sus poemas. El juicio de una mente, corazon, y alma keenly in tune with the rhythm and color of the world.
O, y es Chicana.

"Angela de Hoyos, truly an angel in person, is a very demon when it comes to poetry. Oppression of any sort, superficiality in any form, these she faces down with authority and imagination—and humor. Her poetry is something of a movimiento in its own right, yet de Hoyos seldom lets passion outweigh craft. A remarkable Texas poet."
8888—BRYCE MILLIGAN
8888Editor, Vortex: A Critical Review

"In Selected Poems, Angela de Hoyos turns inward in self analysis and protests quietly towards those who would hurt her. There is irony and humility of spirit in this woman who firmly sets out to engrave her truth..."

"De Hoyos alters English in the process of Hispanicizing it to suit her particular needs. The Hispanic influence adds a

linguistic dimension to the creative process, making her poetry different from the poetry that would be written by a monolingual. This unique characteristic of Chicano literature is evident in Selected Poems."

8888(Relampago Books, Austin, Texas)

"De Hoyos' ability to underscore irony, criticism, humor and myth... through the use of deep cultural and linguistic contexts which underlies the apparently simple surface language...is at the heart of her art."

"...we are all prone to the illness of middle-classitis and all that it implies... we are 'imitation' heroes...incapable of extracting ourselves from the siren-song of a system that day by day converts us into the most docile / obliging / disgustingly amenable of all fish."
