8888About the Author Brigid Aileen Milligan is a senior at Health Careers High School in San Antonio, Texas. The daughter of writers Bryce and Mary Guerrero Milligan, Brigid has writing since early childhood. Her poetry has appeared in several magazines, ranging from Cricket to Pax A Journal for Peace through Culture. She is a two-time recipient of the first grand prize in the Ides of March poetry contest at Palo Alto College, and of the Ana Castillo Prize for Chicana Poetry from the same institution. She has won regional awards for her one-act plays and for video production, and performed her own songs in local coffee houses and on Catholic television. Brigid considers herself one of a new breed of scientist poets. She is the recipient of numerous grand prizes and special awards at the Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair and the Texas Junior Academy of Science. Brigid's first scientific paper (co-authored with Dr. Martin L. Meltz) on the effects of microwave and gamma radiation on mammalian cell biology, will be published shortly in a professional journal. She is also the president of her school's student council, a National Hispanic Scholar, a junior counselor for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program, a past president of the San Antonio Conservation Society's Junior Associates, and a long-time volunteer at local homeless shelters. |
