8888A Rose For Trini Martínez Campbell

Trini Martínez Campbell is a seeker of truth, as a reading of the poems within these pages will confirm. Her quest is to discover the essential human being—the real person—behind the mask that most of us must necessarily wear in the daily struggle for survival.

She has witnessed life—the beauty, the comedy and the tragedy—and from its joy and pain, she has distilled these poems, these voices that ring clearly, proclaiming their honest and unadorned truth.

Trini Campbell is not a novice in the literary/artistic world. Simplemente Yo is her second book of poetry. Her first book Canto Indio Mexicano (New York, Ediciones Abra), is an enchanting narrative poem depicting the rural landscape of Mexico from an indigenous/mestizo point of view.

Not only a maker of poems, Martínez Campbell is also an accomplished visual artist, a playwright, and no less a singer and song composer. Several of her songs have been recorded abroad, including the recent Recordando a José Alfredo (Corrido a José Alfredo Jimenez), lyrics of which appear in this collection.

Some critics have said that "technique" is not all there is to the poetic craft. Beyond a doubt, the poetry of Trini Campbell proves that there is more. Much more. Si, mucho más. Porque aquí hay chispa. Hay alma y vida. Hay energía, integridad, coraje y corazón...
