Since the openig was too small, the rat began to enlarge the opening by gnawing around the edges of the opening. The rat would gnaw for a while then it would lean over the edge of the top and apparently  "spit out" the pieces of wood.  This happened several times. After intermittently gnawing and then  checking out the opening for size, she was again able to get in.
